Brooklyn Rider - Healing Modes
About this event
Brooklyn Rider returns to its roots with “Healing Modes,” an eclectic concert featuring works by Ludwig van Beethoven, Caroline Shaw, and Gabriela Lena Frank. The program is based on the idea of healing, shedding light on beloved and new repertoire.
After numerous collaborative projects with such legendary musicians as Béla Fleck, Martin Hayes, Anne Sofie von Otter, and Joshua Redman, Brooklyn Rider returns to its roots with “Healing Modes”.
“We love shedding new light on known and beloved pieces of the repertoire by surrounding them with new works we help bring into the world,” says violinist Johnny Gandelsman. “We chose to focus on Beethoven’s String Quartet, Opus 132 in large part because of its incredible central movement, the Holy Song of Thanksgiving From a Convalescent to the Deity. We then commissioned new works based on the idea of healing. Each composer came back with a deeply individual take,” adds violinist Colin Jacobsen.
"(Healing Modes) … could not possibly be more relevant or necessary than it is currently”. - The New Yorker
"I don’t believe I’ve ever experienced the radical emotional range of Op. 132’s long, slow movement — with its liberating, dancing interjections — more intensely than when listening to the entirety of “Healing Modes”. - The New York Times
“A string quartet of boundless imagination ...” (NPR Music)
