Sinfonieorchester Basel: Shostakovich Symphony No. 9

For this concert stream, join Sinfonieorchester Basel on an imaginary trip to Russia. The programme features a pair of works by great Soviet composers: Sergei Prokofiev’s virtuoso Second Violin Concerto and Dmitri Shostakovich’s controversial Symphony no. 9. Leonard Bernstein once said of Shostakovich's 9th Symphony, "It's like Mickey Mouse leading a football cheer." Prokofiev’s Second Violin Concerto was the last composition commissioned in the West.

Another international shooting-star will conduct the Sinfonieorchester Basel for this concert: in 2010 the 21-year-old Uzbek conductor Aziz Shokhakimov won second prize at the Gustav Mahler Conducting Competition of the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra. Since then he has worked as a sought-after opera and concert conductor, as chief conductor of the Uzbekistan Symphony Orchestra and musical director of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein. Vadim Gluzman, the Soviet-born Israeli violinist, received early support from Isaac Stern. As an internationally renowned soloist, he has performed with such orchestras as the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Concertgebouw Amsterdam and the Orchestre de Paris.
