Essential Rimsky-Korsakov
Like others in the group of Russian composers known as ‘The Mighty Handful’, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (1844–1908) had established himself in an entirely different profession – as a naval officer – before fully pursuing music. Though a late-starter, he went on to compose music that was remarkable for its brilliant orchestration (Stravinsky was among his many pupils) and memorable melodies, many of them folk tunes from Russia and beyond. This playlist brings together the finest recordings of some of his best-known, most exhilarating and haunting scores.
